Fundraising drive (QC)

Subject Area: Mathematics

Brief overview

This situation consists of making students aware of the basic
functioning of the principle of sales profits as part of a fundraising drive.

Subject area(s)

Mathematics
Competency 1: Resolving a problematic situation
Identifying the elements of the mathematical situation and the task to be resolved, using concepts necessary to resolve it, description of the result based on the situational data

Explanation of the teaching goal

– Sale of products
– Idea of profit (initial cost vs. sale price)

Expected outcomes

Ensure that the students understand the underlying process of product sales by introducing them to the idea of profit, which requires a sale price higher than the actual cost of the product.

Role playing

The teacher announces that the for the end-of-the-year trip, the students should sell promotional items to collect a total of $375 each.

Achievement

The students have a list of products with the purchase price and the sale price of each. It is up to them to determine what they should sell and to calculate the profit they receive to reach the expected amount. The file to fill out is located in the appendix.

Reinvestment

After the students have planned their sales, the teacher goes back over the lesson with the class, using the following questions:
– Why can we make more profit on certain items?
– What are some ways to reduce production costs?
– What do you think about selling at a higher price than the production cost? Is this really necessary?
– How can we determine the sale price of an article?

Provision

No special provisions are required.

Required material

– Appendix: Student file
– Pencils

Evaluation tracks
