Personal Values and Money (BC)

Subject Area: Health

Link to British Columbia Health Curriculum:
  • C1 – factors (including media and peer) that influence personal health decisions
  • C2 – describe strategies for attaining and maintaining physical, emotional, and social health during puberty and adolescence
Link to the New Learning Standards:
  • Identify and apply strategies to pursue personal healthy-living goals
Brief Overview of the Lesson:

In this activity, students will come up with their own personal values and determine how money relates to these values. They will also decorate a “value themed” piggy bank.

Estimated Time Required for Implementation:

One class period

Materials Needed:
  • Copies of the Money Student Handout, magazines and newspapers, jars or tins, and a variety of art supplies
Suggested Implementation Strategy:
Options for Consideration:
  • The teacher may ask the students ahead of time to bring in from home a glass jar or tin, some magazines and any other craft supplies.
  • Instead of making a “piggy bank,” the students may be asked to make a paper collage that reflects their values.
Extended Learning Opportunities:
  • See “Extension” in the lesson plan.
