General Curriculum Outcomes: Speaking and Listening

• Students will be expected to:
  • Speak and listen to explore, extend, clarify and reflect on their thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences
  • Communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly, and to respond personally and critically.

Brief Overview of the Lesson:

The students will use the Internet to read about how to be a smart shopper. These articles teach teens how to spend wisely and save money. After reading and taking notes they will share what they learned with the class.

One class period

Materials Needed:

Computer, paper and pencils

Suggested Implementation Strategy:

• Begin the class by asking the students if they are smart shoppers. If yes, what makes them smart shoppers? If not, why not?
• Divide the students 7 groups.
• Using a jigsaw approach, tell them that they will be using the internet to read several articles about how to be a smarter shopper.
• Tell the class that they will be reporting what they learned and sharing this formation with the class, so taking notes will be necessary.
• Divide the students into several groups.
• Tell the groups to research on the internet how to be a smart shopper.
• Possible websites that they could be accessed are listed next.
