Shopping for Sale Items

Category: Activities: Local | Age Group: 5-7

TOPIC:

Saving Money on Groceries

RESOURCES NEEDED:

Weekly sales flyers from a grocery store

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:

Children need to know how to spend money wisely. One way is to learn to look for sales so they do not have to pay full price. Taking them grocery shopping to buy items that are on sale will show them a valuable way to save money, not just on groceries, but any items that they want to purchase.

THE ACTIVITY:
  • Look at the food flyers that come to your home with your child (or go online to view the weekly food flyers).
  • Decide what you need that week, make a list and show your child the sale items that you plan to purchase.
  • Go to the grocery store and ask your child to help you look for these sale items.
  • Point out the regular prices versus the sale prices.
  • Tell them how much you saved for each item.
FOLLOW UP IDEAS:
  • Each week look at the flyers with your child and let them help you decide what to buy that is on sale that week.
  • Let your child help plan a meal using the food flyers to choose sale items.
