Brief Overview of the Lesson:
The students will look at several famous quotes about money. They will discuss the quotes in groups and share their interpretations of the money messages that are suggested in each quote.
Estimated Time Required for Implementation:
One class period
- A copy of the money quotations provided.
Suggested Implementation Strategy:
- Before the class begins, cut up the money quotes into strips and write the following
quote on the board.
“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness.
Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery.”

- Ask for a volunteer to read it aloud and ask what message about money is suggested by this quote.
- Divide the class into small groups and explain that each group will be given several quotes to read and discuss. Then each group will read their quotes to the rest of the class and give their explanation about what they think the quote is trying to tell the reader about money.
- Randomly hand out the quotes to the groups.
- Each group shares their quotes by reading it, giving an explanation of what they decided it means, and asking the rest of the class for any other possible interpretations.
- End the class with a reflection about what money messages were discussed today and if they agree with these concepts.
Options for Consideration:
- The quotes may be put into envelopes before the class begins and each group chooses an envelope.
- To accommodate any special needs learners, the teacher may want to control which quotes each group gets.
Extended Learning Opportunities:
- Ask the students to find other money quotes or idioms to share with the class.
- Make a poster using their favourite quote and illustrating the money message.
