Let’s Do a Reality Check

Category: Games | Age Group: 18+ (Transition years)

TOPIC:

Money Management

RESOURCES NEEDED:

Access to the following website https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/the-city.html

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:

As teens enter their adult years, they need to be prepared for the myriad of financial issues that come their way. One effective way of preparing them for this is to involve them in simulations so they can experience events and respond without actually “costing them anything.” Role playing in “The City,” an on-line simulation, allows them this opportunity.

THE ACTIVITY:
  • Find an opportunity to sit down with your son or daughter and talk with them about some of the financial situations they may face as they prepare for independent living.
  • Suggest to them that watching a simulation, which would prepare them for some of these events, can be invaluable and introduce them to the website listed above. • Work through some of the beginning activities with them if they so choose (perhaps you could even assume a character).
FOLLOW-UP IDEAS:
  • Have periodic “debriefs” with them to discuss the situations they have dealt with and what they have learned from them.
