We hope every grade seven teacher in participating schools will teach a lesson, in their subject area, about money. But even one teacher can make a difference.
By designating the third Wednesday in April as the “Talk With Our Kids About Money Day” – we want to support teachers in their efforts to integrate financial education into school curriculum. It will be a day on which participating schools will offer life-relevant lessons on money in some or all grade seven subject areas. We hope you will choose to participate in a fun, engaging, and valuable learning day for students. By “Registering,” we will send you the complete “Teacher’s Kit” including background info, lesson plans, activity sheets, posters, and more. Or you can review and download and print the resources you wish to use once you register.
A good discussion to have with students is to debate the topic: “Be it resolved: Money can’t buy happiness.”
A key thing to help students make good decisions about money is to have them think about trade-offs. What will they be giving up today – and in the future?
One of the most important things to help youth with money decisions is to have them “think about their thinking” – why are they making this decision.
Students deal with money in their lives. Aim to draw on their experiences, lessons learned, and situations they have encountered.
Be sensitive to varying financial circumstances of students and their families. Ensure activities don’t embarrass any student or make the student uncomfortable.
Aim to make the lessons relevant to the lives and circumstances of students. Aim to hit on topics important to them in their lives.
By registering, educators will be able to access the resources and lesson plans for their specific province and will also receive, if they request it, copies of the Teacher's Kit.
