Shopping Spree Video

Category: Movies, Music & TV | Age Group: 5-7

Spending Money Wisely

Young children see adults spending money but often they do not appreciate the fact that the amount of money a family has to spend is limited. Watching this TVO video will help them see that if you keep on spending, your money supply will run out. It creates an opportunity to talk with your child about limiting how much to spend when shopping.

  • Ask your child if they know what a shopping spree it?
  • Open the following website and then click on the second set of videos until you get to one entitled Shopping’s Fee. Tell your child you are going to watch a video together about a shopping spree. http://www.tvokids.com/shows/tumbletowntales
  • After watching it, talk to your child about what the Tumbleweed did. Ask questions like:
    1. Did he spend all his money?
    2. Do you think he should have bought all 3 kinds of silos, or should one silo have been enough?
    3. How much money did he have left?
    4. Why did he sell all his purchases to the boat captain?
    5. At the end of the video he has another dollar. What do you think he will do with it?
    6. What else could Tumbleweed do with the dollar besides spend it?
  • Go to the following website and get some smart grocery shopping ideas. Visit the grocery store with your child and try some of these wise shopping ideas.
  • Give your child the opportunity to start learning how to make shopping choices. When you go shopping, give your child a small amount of money and let them choose how to spend it. Resist giving them more money if they don’t have enough money to buy what they want. Let them learn at an early age to stay within a budget.
