Pay Yourself First

Category: Games | Age Group: 5-7

TOPIC:

Giving, spending, and investing money

RESOURCES NEEDED:

Internet access, a computer

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:

Everyone needs to understand how to use money wisely. It is important for children to learn about smart money management concepts from a very young age. This will help them to use their money wisely in the future.

THE ACTIVITY:
  • You and your child will watch a short cartoon video called “Ima’s Dream.”
  • Open the following link and click on age K–2 to watch the video. http://www.richkidsmartkid.com/minigames/imasdream.htm
  • Ask your child: what is the meaning of “Giving, Saving, and Investing?” You may want to view the video again to make certain the child understood these money concepts.
  • At the end of the video an explanation is given as to how to play the game. (In the game the child collects coins and adds them to piggy banks labelled “Giving, Saving,
    and Investing.”)
  • After playing the game ask your child what they learned about how people use money.
FOLLOW UP IDEAS:
  • Help your child save 3 jars or plastic containers and label them Giving, Saving, and Investing. When they get some money discuss with them where they should put
    their money.
