TOPIC:

Workplace Ethics

RESOURCES NEEDED:

A copy of the movie “Jerry Maguire”

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:

As young adults begin their careers, they need to be aware that situations at work may arise that involve honesty and ethics. Sometimes the line has to be drawn when it comes to what is right and what it wrong. It may be difficult for them to know what to do, especially when they are the new employee. This movie tells the story of Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who grows a conscience and writes a mission statement to his company — fewer clients, less money. His statement “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business” gets him unceremoniously fired. He loses his clients and his fiancée, and his career is in ruins. But that’s when he discovers what matters most, and who matters most in his life. The movie creates an opportunity to talk about the ethical choices a person has to make, both in the workplace and in life.

THE ACTIVITY:
  • Suggest to your son or daughter that you watch this movie together. After watching it discuss together what happened in the movie. Talk about what ethical choice Jerry had to make.
  • Ask your son or daughter what they would have done in a similar situation.
